What is a DFARS certification?
The Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation supplement lists US-approved countries from which metals can be purchased.
What makes stainless steel stainless?
Stainless steel must contain at least 10.5% chromium. The chromium reacts with oxygen in the air to form an invisible chrome-oxide surface layer that prevents further oxygen from staining (rusting) the surface. Higher chromium levels and addition of other alloying elements such as nickel and molybdenum enhance the surface layer and improve corrosion resistance. Source: Stainless Steel Information Center
Can stainless steel rust?
Stainless itself does not “rust” with a flaky red oxide on the surface. Any presence of red rust is likely iron particles that have contaminated the surface of the stainless steel and are rusting. First try to remove the rusty iron particles from the surface. If the iron is embedded in the surface, wash the area with a solution of 10% nitric and 2% hydrofluoric acid. Rinse thoroughly with water. Commercially available “pickling paste” can also be used. Source: Stainless Steel Information Center
Is stainless steel magnetic?
The 300 series grades of stainless contain nickel and are not magnetic. The 400 series grades do not contain nickel and are magnetic. Source: Stainless Steel Information Center
Can stainless steel be welded?
Yes, but using a different procedure than welding carbon steel. When welding stainless, the filler rod or electrode must also be stainless steel. Source: Stainless Steel Information Center
What does an “L” designation for stainless steel mean?
The letter L after the grade number (e.g., 304L) indicates a lower level of carbon, usually to enable welding. The “L” designation means carbon content is restricted to a maximum 0.03%. (Normal levels are 0.08% and can be as high as 0.15%.). The lower carbon level enables chromium to remain over 10.5% when welded to sustain corrosion resistance. What is annealed stainless steel?
Annealing is a heat treatment that “softens” metal. The 300 series stainless steels are hardened by cold working—not by heat treatment, as used with carbon steel. Annealing reverses the cold work and restores the stainless steel’s original soft condition. Stainless steel is usually sold in the annealed condition. Source: Stainless Steel Information Center
What does the term “CRES” mean?
CRES stands for Corrosion RESistant steel. The term is used to designate stainless steel and other corrosion-resistant metals. A CRES designation does not always indicate that a product is stainless steel. Source: Stainless Steel Information Center
